Alan Mackenzie is a British thriller writer and author of The DOMINION Trilogy. Raised in the East End of London beneath the shadow of the Royal Albert Docks, he went on to spend forty years in the oil and gas industry, working across Europe, Russia, the Middle East and North Africa.
Although he had written since childhood, it was the encouragement of his late wife, Morag, his first fan and greatest supporter, that inspired him to return seriously to writing.
Today, Alan writes the kind of thrillers he has always loved to read: stories filled with conspiracy, adventure, tension and the irresistible question of what happens next.
THE STORY BEHIND THE STORIES
FROM IDEA TO DOMINION
Alan had been writing stories in one form or another since childhood, but life took him in a rather different direction first.
After studying Process Plant Engineering, he joined an American oil company in the late 1970s and began a career that would span forty years. Working as an Instrument Engineer took him far beyond the East End of London where he had grown up, with projects across Europe, Russia, the Middle East and North Africa.
Those years gave him first-hand experience of different countries, cultures and working environments, as well as the large organisations, politics and competing interests that would later provide fertile ground for his fiction.
Writing, however, never disappeared completely.
It was Alan’s wife, Morag, who encouraged him to return to it seriously. She became his first reader, his first fan and the person who believed most strongly that the stories filling notebooks and computer files deserved to become something more.
Her influence on his writing remains deeply important to him. His dedication in Time’s Up reads:
“To my late wife for her unwavering love, inspiration, belief, and support during our years together.”
Alan experimented with several genres before settling on the stories he most enjoyed reading himself: thrillers driven by adventure, conspiracy, danger and the simple need to turn one more page to discover what happens next.
From that came The DOMINION Trilogy.
Beginning with Time’s Up, the series combines espionage and conspiracy with science fiction, following Samantha Whittaker into a world where powerful organisations operate in the shadows and changing history can have consequences far beyond anything she imagined.
Years after the books were first written, Alan has returned to them again, revisiting the prose, refining the stories and preparing The DOMINION Trilogy for a new generation of readers.
AWAY FROM THE PAGE
BEYOND THE BOOKS
GOLF
When he isn’t writing, there’s a good chance Alan will be on a golf course. You’ll regularly find him playing with the seniors at Tilgate, or enjoying a round with his three sons. Like most golfers, he remains convinced that the next round might finally be the one where everything clicks, the handicap comes down and all those hours of frustration suddenly make perfect sense.
WRITING
Friday afternoons often mean a visit to the Star Inn, continuing a tradition Alan has kept since Morag passed away. There will usually be a pen close at hand, accompanied by copious notes, printed drafts and passages being rewritten for what may or may not be the final time.
THE RELAUNCH
In 2026, Alan returned to The DOMINION Trilogy to prepare newly revised editions of the three novels. More than a simple reprint, the relaunch has given him the opportunity to revisit books that have been part of his life for years, refine them and introduce Samantha Whittaker’s story to a new audience.
